Staying safe around elephants

What to do — and not do — if you meet a wild elephant.

Keep at least 50 metres away. Never approach, follow, feed or photograph an elephant at close range.

If an elephant comes towards you, move away calmly and put a solid obstacle between you. Do not run towards it, shout at it or throw anything.

At night, avoid walking on paths near forest edges and tanks. Use a torch and travel in groups.

If an elephant is injured or trapped, keep people away and contact the Department of Wildlife Conservation. In an emergency call Police on 119.
